Covid-19 vaccination update: 05 January 2021
Due to new advice from the UK Chief Medical Officers, healthcare organisations in Lancashire and South Cumbria are writing to those who have received their first dose of coronavirus vaccination to inform them that we need to reschedule their second vaccination appointment. The new medical advice is that the second dose of the vaccine remains effective when given up to 12 weeks after the first dose, and should be given towards the end of this 12 week period.
All second doses of the Covid vaccine that were scheduled to take place in any setting in Lancashire and South Cumbria, including Primary Care Network sites or Hospital Hubs, from Monday 11th January 2021 will be re-scheduled to take place at a suitable time either 10 or 11 weeks after their first vaccination. This will make sure the second dose is given to patients within 12 weeks of the first dose.
Appointments for anyone who is currently booked to have their second Covid-19 vaccination before Monday 11 January 2021 will go ahead unless you receive information from the healthcare provider to say that this has been cancelled.
While you will need two doses of the vaccine to get the best long-term protection from the virus, you will still have a high level of protection after you received the first dose. The new guidance will also help ensure that as many people as possible benefit from the first dose of the vaccine as soon as possible. Please be reassured that there are no safety concerns in the new guidance, and it will not impact on how effective the vaccination is in protecting you from Covid-19 once the course is complete.
It is very important that you don’t contact the NHS to try and get a vaccine, we will contact you to arrange an appointment.
It is important to note that even when you have received your vaccine, you must continue to follow government guidance on social distancing and wearing a mask, as well as the additional measures in place in your area.
We apologise for any inconvenience, and look forward to seeing you for your second vaccine dose at the right time.
